What is Yukiwarisou? Yukiwarisou is a perennial herbaceous which belongs to ranunculaceae. Christmas roses are also known as ranunculaceae family. Yukiwarisou is distributed throughout limited deciduous broad leaved forests of Akita to Kyushu. We have many habitats here in Toyama-ken. Such as Toyama-shi, Takaoka-shi, Kamiichi-machi, Uozu-shi and Kurobe-shi. Worldly there are related species in Europe, America and China.
There are quite variations. Color of petal, single or double petaled and pattern of leaves for example. That is one of the reasons that there are many Yukiwarisou fans. Many fans produce a new kind by crossbreeding all by themselves since it is not so difficult.
About 20 years ago, most Yukiwarisou on the market was picked from habitats. Now most products are cultured artificially.
How to crossbreed: 1. Put pollen on pistil while the flower is blooming. 2. You will be able to get seeds in early summer. 3. Plant them and it will sprout. 4. You will able to see flowers in a few years.
Lately fans produce original Yukiwarisou with crossbreeding. Contests and exhibition are held for it.
In Niigata-ken(A prefecture right next to Toyama-ken), there are many Yukiwarisou fans like Toyama. Yukiwarisou was designated as official flower of Niigata prefecture in March first 2008.
We are hoping that we can make Yukiwarisou more popular, so that Yukiwarisou will be designated as official flower of Toyama and preserve the habitats in the near future.
